Questions to Ask Assisted Living Tour: A Family Guide

A tour of an assisted living community can feel like an open house. The lobby is warm, the flowers are fresh, and someone kind is walking your family down a hallway that smells like fresh coffee. It is easy to leave with a good feeling and no real information.
The families who choose well are the ones who bring questions. Not a script, and not a checklist that scares the tour guide, but a short list of the things that actually shape daily life once your parent moves in. Here is what to ask, and why each answer matters.
Questions about care
- Who assesses my parent, and how often? You want to hear about an initial assessment, a re-assessment schedule, and a clear person (usually a nurse) who owns the care plan.
- What is the caregiver-to-resident ratio on days, evenings, and overnight? Overnight is where thin staffing usually shows up. Ask about all three shifts.
- How are call lights answered, and how fast? Ask about typical response time and whether they track it.
- How do you handle medication management? Who administers, who documents, and what happens if a resident refuses a dose.
- What happens if care needs increase? Can the community add levels of care, or will my parent need to move? A clear answer here prevents a painful surprise later.
Questions about staff
- What is your caregiver turnover rate? Consistent faces matter more than a fancy chandelier.
- Is there a nurse on-site, and when? Some communities have a nurse only during business hours; some have coverage 24/7.
- What dementia-specific training do staff receive? Even in assisted living, a meaningful number of residents will have cognitive change.
Questions about costs
- What is included in the base monthly rent? Meals, housekeeping, utilities, transportation, and activities should be spelled out.
- How is care priced — flat, tiered, or à la carte? Two communities with the same rent can end up thousands of dollars apart once care is added.
- Is there a community fee, and is any of it refundable? See our guide to community fees vs. monthly rent for what is standard.
- How often do rates increase, and by how much historically? Annual increases are normal, but you want a range you can plan around.
- What happens if funds run low over time? Ask about Medicaid waivers, VA benefits, or internal programs.
Questions about safety
- How do you prevent and respond to falls? Look for a real falls prevention program, not just grab bars.
- What is your emergency and evacuation plan? Power outages, severe weather, and medical emergencies all deserve a clear answer.
- How do you handle wandering or exit-seeking? Assisted living is not locked; if cognition changes, what is the plan?
- May I see the most recent state inspection report? A confident community will hand it over.
Questions about daily life
- May we join a meal? A dining room says more than a brochure.
- What does a typical day look like? Ask for the current activity calendar, not the sample.
- How are new residents welcomed? The first 30 days shape whether it feels like home.
- What are the guest, pet, and visiting policies? Small details, big quality-of-life impact.
A few quiet things to notice on the tour
Beyond questions, pay attention to what you see. Are residents out of their rooms and engaged? Do staff greet residents by name? Is the building calm in the late afternoon? Is the memory care neighborhood, if any, quiet and orderly rather than tense? Tours in the morning look different from tours at 4 p.m. — try to visit twice, at different times of day.
